The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that evaluates the verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills of students intending to study abroad. The exam aims to assist Graduate Schools in determining the capacity for advanced study in applicants.

GRE test is required for those applicants who wish to pursue admission to graduate programs primarily in the fields of engineering and science at educational institutions in the United States.

The test is a computer-based assessment in its entirety, and no two students get the same set of questions. The test has a maximum score of 340. The GRE Score alone can not guarantee admission to a university. The exam is just one of the deciding factors that has been taken into account in an applicant's long process of being accepted to a graduate school they wish.

GRE Exam Pattern

While the GRE pattern will usually vary from time to time, the format crux stays the same. The GRE consists of two Written Essay sections (30 minutes each), two Verbal sections (30 minutes each), two Math sections (35 minutes each), and one experimental section, which can be either verbal or math. If you take the computer-based test, the Verbal and Math sections will have 20 questions each, or 25 questions per section on the paper-based test.

You'll still get two scored math sections on the GRE, two scored verbal sections, and one experimental section (unscored math or verbal), but the order varies. You can get a row of two maths or two verbal pieces. Conceivably, you could get three of the same sort of GRE section with the experimental section, but that would not be very likely to happen, based on sheer possibility.

Section

GRE Sections:

The GRE segment has its own time limit and Query number. Verbal and Quant both contain 20 questions per segment, but Verbal allocates just 30 minutes per segment, while Quant allocates 35 minutes per section. For AW, two separate essays are needed, each within 30 minutes.

Finally, each segment of GRE makes use of its own scoring scale. In 1-point increments Verbal and Quant all use the same scale of 130-170. For a cumulative score of 340 points, the verbal and quantum scores can then be combined (although most applicants and even most schools check the scores separately). AW is unique, and uses half-point scales on a 0-6 scale. ETS uses a mix of human graders and an e-rating system to get your AW score

GRE Preparation - How to prepare for the GRE Test?

There's no cram for the GRE exam. The analysis is by and large a test of trends, not reality, so if you want to increase your GRE score you'll need enough time to practice. We recommend that you devote 4 to 12 weeks to planning for GRE.

  • Check your baseline - Your baseline score is the score you'd get if you would take the GRE today. Take a full-length GRE practice test in the same learning conditions as the actual thing before you do a research plan.
  • Determine your GRE-score goal - You have already begun to draw up a list of the graduate programs you are interested in. Compare the practice test score to the average GRE score for every program in the most recent incoming class
  • Attempt to close the gap - You need a smart prep plan that will hold you accountable and give you the results you need, whether you choose a prep course, online program, or a test prep book. You'll find the right setting for you with only a little work.
  • Practice for technique - Concentrate on how you answer any problem when conducting tests and exercises. The methods you use, and the way you solve a problem, are what makes you improve your GRE.
  • Imitate actual GRE test format - Make sure that you budget online practice to help prepare you for the computer-based test experience in your study schedule. Paper-and-pencil training can help you practice concepts and test-taking techniques, but they don't adapt like the real GRE to your results.
  • Review your results - Often test your results after taking GRE realistic exams. What sorts of issues do you miss constantly? What types of questions do you prefer to ace, and which ones would slow you down?
  • Build your vocabulary for GRE - Vocabulary is also an important element of the GRE Verbal. If you come across new words in your practise test, add them to your list. They were used on the GRE before, and can very well be used again.
  • Practice with and without a calculator - As part of the on-screen interface, a calculator is given for you on the GRE, and can be a huge advantage when used correctly! By using a calculator, figure out makes you more accurate, and when you're better off learning the rules of a core principle in math.
